The UK workforce digital skills gap: Why closing it matters and a roadmap for action

July 2023

Our Digital Skills Roadmap is a major new vision for national action on digital skills in the UK workforce.

This roadmap details the best next steps for government, business and civil society to ensure everyone has the Essential Digital Skills needed for work.

It is a joint publication with the Digital Skills Council and has been part funded by the Department for Science Innovation and Technology, with support from Deloitte.

Progress update

Since publication of the Roadmap in 2023, significant progress has been made.

  • In January 2024, we published an update to the Roadmap, including a breakdown of progress so far and a detailed action plan for 2024.
  • This was followed, in January 2025, with Routes to 20 million which sets out the progress made by the FutureDotNow coalition in 2024 and our ambitious plans for 2025.

The Roadmap is the culmination of what FutureDotNow has seen, learnt and done over the past four years, alongside our 200-plus coalition members.

We are now calling on government, business and civil society to come together and use their collective power to accelerate progress on this national issue.

We’d like to thank all the individuals and organisations who have generously given their time and expertise to support the production of the roadmap, and inform and shape our understanding of the Essential Digital Skills challenge. Their experiences are reflected in these recommendations.
